In an age in which we are all increasingly dependent on digital devices they are still no substitute in the hills for a good old-fashioned map and compass. Join qualified Mountain Leader Jamie Grant on a navigation journey in the high ground of Glen Lyon to learn the essentials to finding your way around in all weather conditions when batteries fail or there is no mobile coverage to fall back on. Jamie will cover everything from basic map reading techniques to timing, pacing, grid references and more advanced orientation skills such as attack points, aiming off and relocation techniques such as aspect of slope.

Jamie is a qualified mountain leader and long-time resident of Glen Lyon. He is also the Director and co-owner of Glen Lyon Coffee Roasters.

Duration: half day
Cost: £45 pp
Group: Maximum of four
Details: Meet at the Glen Lyon Post Office and Tea Room in the Bridge of Balgie at 10am. A morning session that covers theory and basic techniques will be followed by lunch at the tearoom. In the afternoon we will go on a longer walk with multiple navigation legs. Return to your car in Glen Lyon by 3pm. Please bring your own compass and 1:25,000 OS Explorer OL48 map. Lunch is not included in the price. Moderate level of fitness required. Further information will be sent by email on booking.
