Adventures from a Sourcing Trip to Peru

An altitude graph of our trip to Peru would be as jagged as the Andes mountains that run through the country. This was a whirlwind adventure very kindly laid on by PromPeru to encourage foreign trade and I was one of a lucky number of coffee and cacao buyers from North America and Europe invited along for the trip. Within a space of five days we had gone from sea level Lima up to Cusco at 3,400m, then back down to 80% humidity in Puerto Maldonado in deepest Amazonia before heading through a 4,300m high Andean pass to the cool little coffee towns of Quillabamba and Santa Teresa. But first was Expoamazonica in Puerto Maldonado. A fun, laid back jungle city on the shores of the vast Madre de Dios...

Although cafes offer great first time job opportunities for young people in rural Scotland, there are very limited training opportunities in speciality coffee and barista skills. The Glen Lyon Coffee Academy is dedicated to fixing this by running a fully immersive three-month mentoring programme for anyone between 16 and 24 this autumn.

Help us Fundraise for the Katanda Water Project

The Katanda Water Project was initiated by a group of farmers in Uganda who have re-invested some of their income from coffee sales into supplying fresh water to their communities. To support this project, we are fundraising to help our sourcing partner Agri Evolve purchase a network of pipes and taps to distribute the water from the collection tanks the farmers have already built. We are hoping to raise £600—which Glen Lyon Coffee will match for a total of £1200. Climate change is already beginning to affect speciality coffee, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Brazil. However, forward-thinking farmers are looking to alternative, more sustainable growing methods. Gui Foresti from Fazenda do Lobo took a small eucalyptus woodland and planted a mix of Cedar trees, banana trees and the Arara variety of arabica coffee. The result is a delicious coffee grown under shade, a rarity for Brazil.

We love this example from the San Jose De Lourdes district, produced by the Chilcon Family and tasting distinctly sweet and caramel-y—it makes a perfect True North.
